Whatever career path you are considering, a course in religious education will provide so many opportunities. Studying RE offers a huge variety of benefits to students. It teaches the principles of debate, philosophy and ethics. As Scully, a radio producer from London, told us it also provides a vital lesson in understanding human differences and, most importantly, our similarities.
24-year-old Scully is a Producer, Playlist Manager and Presenter at Reprezent Radio.
Although Scully grew up living and breathing music he didn’t dream he’d one day have a career working for a radio station.
Luckily he was in the right place at the right time and had the courage to try new opportunities. Scully was doing work experience at Reprezent Radio, when he was offered the chance to fill in for a presenter. Even though he was nervous, Scully decided to give it a go. He has never looked back since.
Scully is truly passionate about his job. He loves music, having a platform to speak to people from all walks of life and thinking creatively about exciting new content for his shows. Scully talks to a large audience everyday and interviews a number of new artists. One of the many things that helps Scully to be so good at his job is that he studied RE at school. “Studying RE has allowed me to become a better radio presenter and build interesting and inspiring content from a range of perspectives”.
Aside from playing great tunes, Scully also presents a weekly current affairs slot called Politically Peak, where he breaks down all the political news, what’s going on in the world and how it affects young people. Scully enjoys this part of the job because he has a platform to spark an interest in Politics amongst young people and maybe even inspire the next future Prime Minister!
To present and produce content for his shows, Scully needs to understand what’s going on in the world and break it down so that his viewers can make sense of it. Again a knowledge of different religions and beliefs helps him do his job well. “To understand the world, you need to understand religion. Religion is so intertwined in our history, society and culture.”
